From October 17 to 18, 2024, the BRICS Universities Rectors Forum took place at Lomonosov Moscow State University. The Forum was organized by Russian Rectors' Union with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Russia. More than 200 universities and research organizations from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia gathered at the Forum venues. This international event aimed at exchanging experiences among rectors of higher education institutions from BRICS countries was held for the first time. The Forum agenda was determined by current objectives related to the development of research and educational cooperation in the new global conditions, transitioning to fair university ranking and finding solutions to new global challenges in science and higher education.

On October 18, 2024, a special Session of the Forum organized by the BRICS Network of Educational Centers and Scientific Think Tanks (Consortium) was held at the Faculty of Global Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The session focused on the report prepared for the XVI BRICS Summit, which is in the format of a monograph edited by the MSU Rector, Academician Viktor A. Sadovnichy. The report "BRICS Development in the Context of World Dynamics: Challenges and Perspectives" was presented by Professor I.V. Ilyin, Dean of the Faculty of Global Studies. The authors of the monograph, based on mathematical modeling, demonstrate that coordinated actions by BRICS countries can lead to sustainable development of civilizations. The report expands on the ideas presented in the Report to the Rome Club titled "Reconsidering the Limits to Growth," prepared with the involvement of the Faculty's scholars and published by Springer.
Discussions in the Forum Session were held by:

  • President of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Professor Roberto de Andrade Medronho

  • Rector of the Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education (Russia), Professor Dmitry Alekseevich Sychev

  • Rector of Yaroslavl State Medical University (Russia), Professor Alexander Leonidovich Khokhlov

  • President of Aurora University (India), Professor Anudeep Aurora

  • Vice-Rector of Northeast Normal University (China), Professor Wu Zhi Hui

  • Vice-Rector of Tehran University (Iran), Professor Elham Aminzadeh

and other professors and scholars from BRICS countries who addressed key aspects of BRICS development as a vital international platform. The Session discussed BRICS's influence on global economy, geopolitics, and social transformations amid rapid changes in global politics. Each presentation contributed a unique perspective to the discussion, emphasizing the importance of a multilateral approach in addressing global challenges. The reports covered a wide range of topics related to sustainable development and interactive approaches in education, science and technology.
The Session concluded with solemn ceremonies for signing cooperation agreements among participants:

  • Specific Agreement for Academic Cooperation entered into by and between the Faculty of Global Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), and Federal University of Rio De Janeiro (Brazil)

  • Agreement for Cooperation in Science and Education between the Faculty of Global Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), and Aurora Higher Education and Research Academy, deemed to be University (India)

  • Agreement on the implementation of inclusive education programs between the Faculty of Global Studies, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), and Northeast Normal University (China)

Such agreements not only strengthen academic ties among BRICS countries but also create a foundation for the exchange of ideas, technologies and best practices, which are vital for collective progress and sustainable development. Participants of the Forum Session expressed confidence that collaborative efforts in science and education will address current challenges and open new horizons for cooperation within the BRICS framework. In conclusion, the parties exchanged commemorative gifts and expressed hope for fruitful collaboration.
